Impacting Richmond

With a focus on students from Richmond City Schools, Partnership for the Future was begun in 1994 to ensure that every motivated student with limited resources has a workplace internship in high school and is prepared to attend the college of their choice. In addition to the summer internship and development program, Partnership now offers year-round college prep, critical thinking, workforce development, and community building activities.

Alan Kirshner, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Richmond-based Markel Corporation, read a Pulitzer Prize-winning article that motivated him to start Partnership for the Future. These articles written in The Wall Street Journal were about a minority student and his struggles to succeed. Kirshner was outraged to think that motivated students in Richmond might be denied academic opportunities because of a lack of life experiences, and decided there was an opportunity for the business community to help Richmond-area students like Cedric succeed. Armed with the belief that private industry could best train people for the workforce, Alan contacted several Richmond business leaders to help create a program called Partnership for the Future (PFF) to provide high achieving motivated youth in Richmond with exposure to successful business environments that might also assist students in preparing for college.

That first year, Markel Corporation, S&K Brands and Best Products signed on as charter members of Partnership. Today, more than 70 companies currently participate in the Partnership program, with 155 students expected to be enrolled in Summer 2008.

  • More than 80% of students who enter PFF complete the program.
  • 99% of those who complete the program enter a 4-year college/university.
  • SAT scores increased an average 356 points after a donor funded private SAT preparation classes.
  • The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce awarded the 2000 Workforce One All-Star Award to PFF for Education and Training.
